Lighting that makes the room feel like a cathedral

Egeskov is a well-preserved 460 year-old moat castle on the island Funen in Southern Denmark. Apart from the castle itself, visitors can also take a walk in the gardens and see the owner’s exhibit of classic cars and planes. And now, this exhibition can be seen in a completely different light.

The job was something out of the ordinary. The castle owner wanted to give visitors a sense of the room opening up to them when they enter, revealing the impressive ceiling construction. It should be like walking into a cathedral – at least that was the picture he described. This made the electrician contact Solar for help.

The primary task was to light up the ceiling rafters. With 17 metres to the ceiling, the castle owner didn’t feel that the visitors really experienced the true grandness and beauty of the room.

- The distribution of lighting was our first concern, says Solar’s lighting consultant, Martin Frederiksen. The challenge was to give the wood more of a glow by using indirect lighting as opposed to direct lighting. We didn’t quite achieve this in the first try. So, we had to test different distributions and colours of lighting before the owner was pleased.

- the skylights in the room were sealed off so that the artificial light could create the right environment, Martin Frederiksen explains.

The lights were fitted 5 metres above the floor. But above them, we still had 12 metres of space that needed to be lit up.

Next task was to light up the exhibition. Here, we installed a dimming filter on all spots, so that people will not be blinded when they look up at the planes hanging from the ceiling.

now, they have flexible and effective lighting, which they’re able to adjust so that it fits their exact wishes and can be adjusted when the exhibition or the seasons change, Martin Frederiksen says about the finished project.

What was used for the project?
Custom-made light fittings with a warm glow – 2,700 Kelvin with an extra intense representation of red colours as well as special distribution of lighting and closed light fixtures for easy cleaning.
