New super pump from Thermonova – Kumla is first mover
TEXT: MAGNUS CARLSSON PHOTOS: SAMUEL UNÉUS Large plants require a lot of heating. Our logistics centre in Kumla is the first in Sweden to install GeoNova Propane – a high-tech ground source heat pump that redraws the map for large-scale heating.
A key issue when building a large industrial property is heating. It is a very large volume that will be heated in a premises of 48,000 square meters, and how you choose to do it has a major impact on energy consumption, climate impact and, not least, cost over time. When Solar built the new logistics center in Kumla, we decided to heat the property with one of the foremost products on the market: ThermoNova's GeoNova Propane ground source heat pump – a product that has never before been installed in Sweden. The pump is fully adapted for large properties and facilities that often have a high and constant heat demand, such as commercial properties, industrial buildings and larger residential buildings. The GeoNova solution can also be easily connected to other energy and heating solutions, such as solar cells, radiators, underfloor heating, boilers and ventilation systems. - GeoNova Propane is a product that is at the absolute forefront when it comes to technology and area of use. We have long believed that this is a product that will make a big difference, and now that we have seen how well it works in Kumla, we are convinced that this is also the case, says Jonas Widström, VP Operations at Solar and responsible for the construction in Kumla.
What really stands out about GeoNova Propane is the use of propane as a refrigerant, which is an important part of the work to phase out fossil fuels. Unlike traditional, synthetic alternatives that are often used as a refrigerant, propane has a very low climate impact. This is advantageous in the event of a leak, but also serves as a future-proofing when the use of synthetic refrigerants is limited in the future. Twelve pumps are used in Kumla, and 84 boreholes have been drilled for these with a depth of between 250 and 300 metres. It took 1,100 working hours to get the piping infrastructure and installation together, but the moment the pumps were turned on, the electricity bill dropped drastically. Until then, an electric heater was used on the building, and energy consumption was immediately reduced by 3,000 kWh per day. - The pump has worked really well, we heat the property in a very efficient way. It is also a smart solution where we can use the cold from the boreholes. So in practice, we get the cooling for free, says Jonas Widström, and continues: - GeoNova Propane is a fantastic product for those who want an energy-efficient, sustainable solution that is also future-proof. If you want to see it in practice, you are also warmly welcome to us in Kumla and we will show it.
